Canberra Brass celebrates its 40th with a concert

Another great mix of arts and entertainment awaits Canberra and surrounds as HELEN MUSA reports in her latest Artsweek column. 

Canberra Brass celebrates 40 years of fostering the spirit of brass in the Canberra community and the region with a concert at Hawker College’s Murranji Theatre, November 24.

The Brindabella Orchestra, formally the U3A Orchestra, is holding its 25th anniversary concert, with popular compositions and The Miniature Concerto by Rowley, featuring piano soloist John Yoon. Weston Community Hub, November 24.

Stage

  •  Ed Sala’s play Bloody Murder, sees the lady of the usual remote manor inciting revolt against the author who writes it. Directed by well-known actor Josh Wiseman, it’s billed as a diabolical comedy. Canberra Rep Theatre, November 21-December 7.
  • Liz Lea’s A Stellar Lineup celebrates the Olympic Games and sporting achievements of performers, including Olympians and Paralympians. Belco Arts Theatre, November 22-23.
  • The Invaders’ Fear of Memories is a solo theatre piece based on the life and diaries of Yousef Nachmani, who migrated from Tsarist Russia to Ottoman Palestine in 1907. It’s written and performed by Ben Rivers, who plays 12 characters. Ralph Wilson Theatre, Gorman Arts Centre, November 21-23.
  • Eurydice, by Sarah Ruhl, directed by Amy Kowalczuk, looks at the ancient tale of Orpheus and Eurydice through a feminist lens. The Mill Theatre at Dairy Road, November 27-December 14.

Exhibitions

  • Christmas Squared, a festive group exhibition of local talent will be show, alongside A Sense of Place, a solo exhibition by Alison Oberg. Rusten House Art Centre, Queanbeyan, November 23-December 14.
  • On Scale is the ANCA Artist Group Show curated by Bruce Reynolds & Ruth Waller. ANCA Gallery, Dickson, November 21-December 8.
  • An exhibition by Molly Kamenz combines botany and topography through etchings and lithographs. Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Manuka, , November 22-December 1.

Concerts

  • ANU Community Music Centre’s Jazz Jambo will take place in Big Band Room, Peter Karmel Building, ANU, November 22.
  • Director’s favourites chosen by Helen Swan will celebrate choral music from 35 years with The Resonants, accompanied by Emily Leong on piano. Ainslie Arts Centre, Braddon, November 23.
  • Art Song Canberra presents “Young Voices of America” with soprano Rachel Mink. Wesley Uniting Church, Forrest, November 24.
  • Canberra Qwire’s End of Year concert, The Sound of Us: A Celebration of Community in Song, is at Llewellyn Hall, November 24.
  • Oriana Chorale presents Rachmaninoff’s Vespers with guest soloists Andrei Laptev, Andrew Fysh, and Maartje Sevenster. Anzac Memorial Chapel of St Paul, Duntroon , November 24.
  • TraXion Big Band and Friends are staging a fun end-of-year celebration featuring two bands, Zackerbilks and the Dylan Slater Collective, as well as a set by the big band. White Eagle Polish Club, David Street, Turner, November 24.
  • Canberra jazz vocal choral group Rhythm Syndicate will be performing four-part harmony songs and Christmas tunes at Wesley Music Centre, Forrest, November 27.
