Low-flying debut gets Batik Air into bother

Batik Air is now flying direct services Canberra to Bali.

By aviation writer Scott Mayman

Batik Air has only been flying into Canberra for a month but Australia’s Transportation Safety investigators are looking into the potential for a serious incident involving the carrier’s maiden flight.

On June 14,  airline officials were holding an event at Canberra airport to celebrate Batik’s maiden flight linking Canberra and Denpasar.

The flight arrived as scheduled,  with the gathering attended by a variety of dignitaries, including the Indonesian ambassador.

However,  it’s been revealed,  the jet came in to the Canberra airfield below the minimum altitude.

Investigators have described it as “a serious incident” and have already started their interviews with crew and flight controllers.

A public release of the investigator’s report is due by the end of the year.
