Reserves reopen as kangaroo cull ends

Seven nature reserves have reopened to the public following the end of the ACT government’s annual kangaroo cull, which this year left 1232 animals dead.
The ACT’s Conservator of Flora and Fauna, Bren Burkevics, thanked the community for their patience and co-operation during the closure period.

The following reserves have now reopened to the public without restrictions:

•Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve
•Gungaderra Grasslands
•Mt Ainslie Nature Reserve
•Mt Majura Nature Reserve
•Mulanggari Grasslands
•Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve
•Red Hill Nature Reserve

“Fertility control activities through the ongoing use of GonaCon Immunocontraceptive Vaccine will continue as part of the Kangaroo Management Program,” Mr Burkevics said.

“Work to protect and enhance the ACT’s parks and reserves will continue at pace through controlling weeds, removing invasive animals and restoring areas of high conservation value.”

One Response to Reserves reopen as kangaroo cull ends

CanberraDr says: 3 July 2024 at 11:18 am

The current ACT Government and their one eyed biased ecologist are misguided in thinking they are delivering anything other than systematic extermination of our urban roos trapped in reserves. Between shooting and rendering them infertile for their lifespan ( imagine if we humans were never allowed to experience parenthood) we will see fewer and fewer roos. A brutal and unscientific practice. Thank god its over …..until next year unless Canberrans say NO
