Jyle’s mysterious death: police keep seeking answers

On the third anniversary of 28-year-old Queanbeyan man Jyle Molloy Murphy’s death on Pialligo Avenue, ACT police are again appealing for information from the public.

Police say Jyle was struck and killed by a vehicle on Pialligo Avenue heading towards Queanbeyan at about 11pm on Sunday, February 27, 2022.

In a statement, Jyle’s family says: “We struggle through each day, heavily grieving the loss of Jyle. Our hearts will forever ache for our son, brother, uncle, partner, friend and missing piece of our family.

“It is sickeningly gut wrenching knowing that the guilty conscience who robbed Jyle of living his valued life, is living their life freely.

“Someone knows that they’re responsible (or who that person is) for their heinous act of taking Jyle’s life away. Take accountability for what you’ve done or what you know – please do the right thing and speak up.”

Police have confirmed Jyle was picked up by a dark-coloured sedan while he was on Morshead Drive sometime before 11pm that evening, and are re-releasing dash-cam footage from another vehicle that shows this.

Soon after, Jyle left the vehicle and was walking along Pialligo Avenue when he was struck and killed.

A review of CCTV footage also identified a white Toyota 4WD in the area.

Sgt Will Stevenson said police knew there were people with information in the community, including the occupants of those two vehicles.

“Today, I am once again appealing to members of the community with any information about Jyle’s death to get in contact with us,” he said.

“Imagine if it was your family member or friend, and you were still left with unanswered questions as to what happened to your loved one three years later.

“We know there are people in the community who have information, and we are urging those people to do the right thing and come forward.

“This is not going away and police will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident until we have answers.

“Any information you might have, no matter how big or small, could be the piece that we need to ultimately discover what happened to Jyle.”

Police are once again calling on any of the occupants of the dark sedan or white 4WD to come forward. It is likely the occupants of the sedan were the last people to see Jyle alive.

Anyone who saw Jyle on the evening of February 27 three years ago anywhere between Russell and Pialligo, or was travelling eastbound on Pialligo Avenue, towards Queanbeyan, should contact police.

Additionally, police are also asking Canberrans to consider anyone who was visiting Canberra that night that may have been driving on this road. The Red Hot Summer Tour concert had finished earlier in the evening and interstate visitors may have been leaving Canberra via Pialligo Avenue at this time.

Anyone who can assist should call 1800 333000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
