Memorial unveils its Rising Sun copper roof

The War Memorial’s new copper roof… inspired by the iconic Rising Sun badge worn by the Australian Army.

The Australian War Memorial’s copper roof – inspired by the iconic Rising Sun badge worn by the Australian Army – is nearing completion on the new Anzac Hall.

War Memorial director Matt Anderson said: “In a fitting tribute, the roof of the new Anzac Hall draws inspiration from the iconic Australian Rising Sun badge, reflecting the spirit of the ANZACs that endures through to today’s generation of service personnel.

“The cutting-edge copper roof is an extension of the memorial’s original vision and goes hand in hand with the famous copper dome silhouette.”

Last month Prime Minister Anthony Albanese launched the new Main Entrance at the front of the heritage building, calling the Australian War Memorial the “most important building in the nation”.

Set for completion by Anzac Day 2026, Mr Anderson said: “Anzac Hall will honour the past and also bring into focus conflicts of the new generation including peacekeeping.

“We will tell the stories of our newest veterans and defence operations in the same museum that houses our oldest relics.

“From mid-March we will be craning our larger technology items into lower Anzac Hall and soon our much-loved G for George Lancaster bomber will be back at the memorial.”
