PREPARATION is underway for Queanbeyan Aquatic Centre’s 60th birthday.
The heritage-listed pool will celebrate six decades in November.
Locals are being encouraged to help with Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council’s (QPRC) plans to celebrate the pool’s anniversary by sharing a memory or sending in pictures of the pool — the older the better.
QPRC’s Mark Spear says the pool has always been a much-loved part of the city’s fabric.
“We are planning a small gathering, perhaps a breakfast and tour of the pool, to acknowledge the people have been involved with the pool over the years and those who helped establish it,” Mr Spear says.
“It will be an opportunity for people to reminisce, share their memories and tour the facility because it has changed a lot over the years.”
Th pool, originally called Queanbeyan’s War Memorial swimming pool, opened on Armistice Day, November 11, 1961.
Built on Moore Park between Campbell and Crawford Streets, and designed by Robert G. Warren, the much-loved pool featured “sausage shaped” domes, which still make an impression today.
The seven lane 50m pool, was built with grants from the state government and community donations, it also included diving towers and a toddler’s pool.
In 2000, the 50m outdoor pool was upsized to include eight lanes and an upgraded filtration system.
A 25m indoor heated swimming pool was added in 2014 and a children’s splash park was opened in 2018.
