Activists paint their protests over department reception

CLIMATE protestors are at it again, but this time they have glued themselves to the reception desk at the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment in Parkes.

It’s the third time this week that the movement, Extinction Rebellion, has led rallies in the ACT.

On Tuesday a group from the movement blocked Barry Drive for two hours in the morning before they moved their protests to Parkes on Wednesday afternoon (August 4), to take their message — urging the government to act on the current climate and ecological emergency — directly to federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley.

Just after midday today (August 6), the activists occupied the foyer of the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment where they threw red paint on the floor, superglued themselves to the reception desk and covered themselves in tomato sauce.

They demanded that Minister Ley drop her appeal in the Federal Court, which had ruled in mid-July that she has a duty of care to protect young people from the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions.

The activists say this will be an escalation of Wednesday’s protest, which they expect will to lead to multiple arrests.

Five had already been arrested following the first protest, with one released on bail and the another four released after appearing in court.
