Charges laid after sex-worker assault

A CALWELL man sexually assaulted a female sex worker at knifepoint and stole cash from her unit, police say.

The man, 34, was charged yesterday (April 4) with sexual assault in the third degree and aggravated robbery, following the incident at the sex worker’s residence in the city on March 25.

Police say the sex worker contacted them in late March and made the allegations.

A police sexual assault team conducted an investigation and executed a search warrant at a Calwell residence yesterday, following which the man was arrested and charged.

He will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (April 5).

Detective Inspector Callum Hughes encourages any victim of sexual assault to come forward when they are ready to do so.

“Police recognise the courage that is required to report your experience of assault and want to reassure victims that we take all matters seriously,” Detective Inspector Hughes says.

To report sexual violence contact ACT Policing on 131 444.
