Hair loss is a frustrating and confidence-draining experience that affects millions of people worldwide, and Canberra is no exception, says JENNA CHAN.
JENNA Chan, co-director of Hair and Skin Science Canberra, said whether it was due to genetics, stress, or a medical condition, many individuals struggled with hair loss.
“However, the good news is that effective solutions are available through trichologists in Canberra that can help combat hair loss for good,” she said.
“First and foremost, it’s important to note that hair loss is a common problem, with an estimated 50 per cent of men and 30 per cent of women experiencing some form of hair loss during their lifetime.
“One of the most common causes of hair loss is genetics. Male pattern baldness is the most common cause of hair loss in men, while female pattern baldness is the most common cause of hair loss in women. These conditions are usually inherited and can cause hair to thin and fall out over time. Hormonal changes during pregnancy, menopause, and thyroid disorders can also lead to hair loss, as can stress and poor nutrition.”
In addition to genetics and hormonal changes, there were also medical conditions that could cause hair loss, she said.
Alopecia was a condition that causes hair to fall out in patches, while scalp infections could damage hair follicles and lead to hair loss. Autoimmune disorders such as lupus and psoriasis could cause inflammation that damaged hair follicles and lead to hair loss.
“Thankfully, there are several effective solutions available through trichologists in Canberra that can help combat hair loss,” said Jenna.
“From hair transplants and scalp micropigmentation to laser therapy and topical treatments, trichologists offer a variety of options to address hair loss. Whether you’re experiencing hair loss due to genetics, stress, or a medical condition, there is a solution available to help you say goodbye to hair loss for good.
Types of hair loss
Jenna said there were several types of hair loss, each with its causes and treatment options. Male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, was the most common type of hair loss in men.
“It’s caused by an inherited sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that causes hair follicles to shrink and eventually stop producing hair,” Jenna said.
“Female pattern baldness, on the other hand, is caused by a combination of genetics and hormonal changes.”
Effective solutions for hair loss
There were several effective solutions available for hair-loss treatment, ranging from non-invasive treatments to surgical procedures Jenna said.
She listed the top, effective solutions for combatting hair loss, each with its own benefits and considerations.
One such solution was choosing to have a hair transplant, which involved transplanting hair follicles from one part of the scalp to another, she said.
“This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and takes several hours to complete. The transplanted hair follicles will continue to grow in their new location, providing a natural-looking head of hair,” said Jenna.
“Another option is PRP, a non-invasive treatment that involves injecting concentrated platelets from the patient’s blood into the scalp. These platelets contain growth factors that can help stimulate hair growth and reverse the effects of hair loss. This procedure takes around 45 minutes to complete and requires no downtime.
“Minoxidil is a topical medication that can be used by both men and women to promote hair growth. It works by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles, stimulating hair growth, and preventing further hair loss. Minoxidil is available over-the-counter and can be easily applied to the scalp.
“In addition to these treatments, making certain lifestyle changes can also help prevent hair loss and promote healthy hair growth.
“Eating a balanced diet, rich in vitamins and minerals, getting enough sleep, reducing stress and avoiding harsh hair products can all contribute to maintaining healthy and strong hair.”
Jenna said it was important to note that the best hair-loss solution for an individual would depend on several factors, including the type and severity of hair loss.
“Therefore, it’s recommended to consult a trichologist in Canberra for personalised advice on the most suitable treatment option for your hair-loss concerns,” she said.
