Artsweek/ Ten Tenors back to sing up a rhapsody

Arts editor HELEN MUSA previews a week of local arts events, exhibition and concerts in her latest “Artsweek” column.

THE Ten Tenors return with a show featuring new numbers all the old favourites such as “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Hallelujah”, “Funiculì Funiculà” and “Nessun Dorma”. Canberra Theatre, July 15.

THE National Film And Sound Archive is holding a session called “Designing Playful And Vibrant Places,” with artist Baden Pailthorpe on the panel. July 14.

ADFAS Canberra has one  of the UK’s most versatile music commentators, Sandy Burnett, giving  a lecture on the age of jazz at the National Library, July 18.

THE Scandinavian Film Festival is back with new films from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland. The centrepiece is historical drama “Godland”. Palace Electric, July 19-August 9.

  • “HYPERSPECTRAL” is an unusual initiative by Photo Access that will transform Manuka Arts Centre Gardens into a display of digital and sound artworks, July 15.
  • “THE Angel and the Aviator”, drawings, and sculptures by Stephen Harrison open at Kyeema Art Gallery in Capital Wines, Hall,  on July 14 and runs until August 13.
  • “CAPTURING Canberra: CMAG’s Press Photography”, Canberra Museum and Gallery, until January 28.

  • “LUCIE In the Sky” by Brisbane’s Australasian Dance Collective pairs dancers with five drone characters. The Playhouse, July 14-15.
  • ROALD Dahl’s tale of gruesome twosome, The Twits, is coming to The Q in a revoltingly-funny production for the whole family. Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre, July 13-14.
  • NICK Enright’s drama “Good Works” is now running in preview at The Mill Theatre, Fyshwick, until July 15, with the official season running July 19-August 12.
  • CANBERRA Youth Theatre presents “Sympathetic Resonance” by Emerge Company, C-Block Theatre, Gorman Arts Centre, July 14–16.
  • “STARS in 3D” is a season of dance and technology at Gorman Arts Centre, July 15-July 16.

Concerts

  • SELBY and Friends, Natalie Chee on violin, Julian Smiles on cello, Kathryn Selby on piano will be at the James Fairfax Theatre with “Fathers”, July 13.
  • CANBERRA Symphony Orchestra joins Tuggeranong Arts Centre in “Explore The Orchestra: Meet The Brass”, Albert Hall, July 13 and Tuggeranong Arts Centre, July 14.
  • CODA Chroma (Kate Lucas) is on a tour in support of her third studio album album “Dreamself”. Smiths Alternative, Civic, July 14.
  • CANBERRA Symphony Orchestra is partnering with Uncharted Territory Festival to present “Music to Your Ears: The Science of Hearing Through Classical Music”, Marie Reay Teaching Centre, July 15.
  • ORIANA Chorale is joining the Phoenix Collective in two performances of “Dark and Luminous Night”. Larry Sitsky Recital Room, ANU School of Music, July 15.
  • CANBERRA indie folk, soul and blues muso Ben Drysdale has won second place in the Hawaii Songwriting Festival songwriting competition. with his song, “Listen Now”. He appears with Niall Howe at Smith’s Alternative, July 15.
  • MUSICA Viva’s director Paul Kildea has scripted a chamber music and theatre work to honour Chopin’s revolutionary 24 Preludes in “Chopin’s Piano”. Llewellyn Hall,  July 19.
