THE Australian War Memorial’s $15,000 Napier Waller Art Prize has opened for submissions.

The prize is named after the legendary Australian artist and veteran, Mervyn Napier Waller, best-known for the mosaics and stained glass for the Hall of Memory at the memorial.

Director Matt Anderson says the prize aims  to promote artistic excellence while recording experiences of service.

The entrants, who must be  current and former Australian Defence Force personnel,  can submit any original work in any visual art medium and the winning work will be displayed alongside highly commended works at Parliament House in May 2024, then will be accepted into the Memorial’s National Collection.

Finalists’ works will also be displayed on the Australian War Memorial’s website and the general public can vote in the $5000 People’s Choice Award.

Last year, Anneke Jamieson won both the 2022 Napier Waller Art Prize and the People’s Choice Award with her portrait, “The Promotion”, featuring a uniformed servicewoman breastfeeding her baby.

Entries close on December 17 here.
