THREE charity bins were lit on fire and destroyed in Gungahlin yesterday, with police calling the act “particularly low” in the lead-up to Christmas. 

Around 2.20pm Gungahlin police officers saw a large amount of smoke coming from The Salvation Army charity bins located on Ernest Cavanagh Street.

Firefighters were called to extinguish the blaze, managing to limit the fire damage to three charity bins and their contents.

Police would like to speak to two young girls who witnesses observed near the bins prior to the fire. They were possibly driving a 1990s model silver Mitsubishi Magna or similar.

Officer in Charge of Gungahlin Station Jeff Knight says it is disappointing that someone would destroy bins containing charitable donations.

“This is a despicable at any time of year but it is particularly low leading up to Christmas,” Sergeant Knight said.

“Arsonists often stay in the area to watch a fire they have lit, so the bystanders may well be those who lit the fire.”
