Corbell’s plan to reduce crime

NEW targets for crime reduction in the ACT have been set, according to the recently released ACT crime reduction strategy.

The “Property Crime Reduction Strategy”, released today, is the government’s “clear plan”  to reduce burglaries by 10 per cent and car thefts 20 per cent by the end of 2015.

Attorney General Simon Corbell said the strategy aims to see less people “fall victim to a recidivist offender as well as to help the offender increase their social, health, employment, housing and financial outcomes” and aims to stop the likelihood of children of offenders becoming offenders.

“This is a robust document that gives the ACT Government and ACT Policing a clear direction to ensure Canberrans are protected in their homes as well as while out and about in the community,” Attorney General Simon Corbell said.

“It sets down new reduction targets to see the positive downward crime trends continue.

“The most recent data, released in the March quarter figures of the ACT Criminal Statistical Profile, shows, compared to the previous 12 months, burglary offences dropped by 25 per cent, and motor vehicle theft declined by 27 per cent, and the targets announced today demonstrate a tangible commitment by the ACT Labor Government to see these results continue.

“The government believes that stopping the cycle of reoffending, intervening early before offences take place, creating a more robust support network for victims of crime as well as boosting security to local community groups all help to prevent criminal activity and achieve the targets.

“This strategy focuses on government and the community working together to prevent crime, to keep young people out of the justice system and to reduce the opportunity for crime by making public places, cars and houses safer.”

? and a continued target on recidivist offenders through the ACT Property Crime Targeting Team. [/box]
