Coutts tipped to bear flag at closing ceremony

CANBERRA Olympic swimmer Alicia Coutts has been tipped to be the Australian flag-bearer at the London Olympics closing ceremony.

Online bookmaker tomwaterhouse.com has listed Coutts as the favourite at $3, saying she has raced up the betting market as a result of being “Australia’s highest achiever of a thus far disappointing Olympics”.

Site managing director Tom Waterhouse says Alicia “has been Australia’s brightest star of London 2012 up to this point.”

“No Australian has won more medals at a single Olympic Games than Alicia and she played a starring role in Australia’s against-the-odds success in the women’s 4×100 metres freestyle relay final on the opening day of competition,” he said.

Waterhouse said cyclist Anna Meares was the original favourite but she’s dropped to $51.

If Coutts is successful it will mean the two Australian flag-bearers for the London Olympic Games were both from the capital; with Canberra-based basketball player Lauren Jackson carrying the flag at the opening ceremony.
