CHIEF Minister Katy Gallagher has acknowledged colleague John Hargreaves’ contribution to the Legislative Assembly in his final sitting day before retirement.
In his 14 years in the Assembly, Mr Hargreaves has held several ministerial and shadow ministerial portfolios.
The veteran politician and former minister resigned from the role of government whip in February following reports of an alleged “gay slur” towards his colleague Andrew Barr surfaced, and will leave politics at October’s election.
Ms Gallagher says Mr Hargreaves’ departure will mean “the loss of a popular, engaging and engaged local member.”
“[John’s] approachability, his good humour, his knack of finding a way to deliver a result, and his passion for this city and its people are obvious to anyone who meets him, anyone who turns to him for help,” she said.
“These have been the qualities that have served him well as an MLA, as a Labor man and as a Caucus colleague.”
As a Minister, Mr Hargreaves’ portfolio has included Territory and Municipal Services, Multicultural Affairs and Housing, and he has been a member of eight Select Committees on Estimates, including four as Deputy Chair.
