SIR Richard Kingsland, a highly respected former RAAF Group Captain and senior public servant, has died in a Canberra hospital.

The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon, says Sir Richard was a leader to those around him and an inspiration to his colleagues.

“In 1940, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross after a courageous display in fighting his way out of enemy custody during a mission in French Morocco,” he said.

After his time in the RAAF, Sir Richard worked in a range of public service positions before being appointed Secretary of the then Repatriation Department – now Veterans’ Affairs – where he served from 1970 to 1981 under eight ministers.

“For over a decade, Sir Richard worked tirelessly for the veteran community. He wanted to see Australian veterans, many of whom were his mates, get the support and recognition they deserved,” Mr Snowdon said.

“He was highly regarded in both the Defence and veteran community, and Sir Richard will be forever remembered as an extraordinary Australian.

“My thoughts are with Lady Kingsland and the Kingsland family at this difficult time.”
