Fitzroy River in film

MardoowarraWE know it’s cold out there, but this evening, as part of Manning Clark House’s Indigenous Studies Series, a remarkable film will be screened.

“Mardoowarra Living Water,”  by Magali McDuffie, is a 30 minute documentary on the Fitzroy River in the Kimberley that also takes up the threats of industrialisation and mining.

Filmmaker Magali McDuffie has been working with Nyikina women in the Fitzroy River region of the West Kimberley for the last 6 years, first as a volunteer filmmaker with Indigenous Community Volunteers, and currently as a PhD scholar with the National Centre for Indigenous Study.

Her film includes interviews with Aboriginal elders, Dr. Anne Poelina, scientists, environmentalists, young people and footage of the unique Kimberley country.

McDuffie comments, “Mardoowarra Living Water is the women’s film and the message they wanted to send to the international community. I am only their ‘vehicle’, using a camera to bring out the things they want to say. I usually try to present the film with at least one of the women, as we did last year at UNESCO, but they have chosen this medium in order to make their voices heard, and are quite happy for me to show the film in various venues if they cannot come. As a filmmaker I like to talk about those films being ‘conversations’ – different ‘interview-conversations’ over the years form the basic structure of the film.”

“Mardoowarra Living Water,”  at Manning Clark House, 11 Tasmania Circle Forrest, 5:30pm,Tuesday, June 25, $10/$7 members.  Bookings 6295 1808 or info@manningclark.org.au
