Free public wifi gets a launch before October rollout

CHIEF Minister Gallagher has announced the details of her plan to roll out city wide wireless internet, largely duplicating the work of telecommunications companies.

“In October this year, Civic East – from Garema Place to Marcus Clarke Street – will be the first area of the city to go live, making it the largest continuous free outdoor public wireless network in Australia. This will be followedby a staged rollout in other town centres and commercial precincts over the following 12 months,” Katy said.

“The new free public Wi-Fi service will deliver users with 100 megabytes per day, totalling 3 gigabytes per month.”

iiNet is going to be the provider, delivering 745 access points for $3.1 million.

“CityNews” hears that to celebrate the media event some sort of temporary free wifi will be running in Garema Place this afternoon. It does not reach as far as our palatial suites.
