THE chairs of Canberra’s two principal business lobby groups – The Canberra Business Council and the local Chamber of Commerce – have written to members to announce a possible amalgamation.
In an open letter to members of both organisations, Michelle Melbourne (Business Council) and Julian Barrington-Smith (Chamber of Commerce) say the boards of both organisations have agreed to take a proposal to members of both organisations to create a new company to represent business in Canberra and the region.
The letter says the purpose of creating a new company is to combine the experience and resources of the two organisations to “bring a greater depth and quality to the important services provided to business and the policy and advocacy work that is vital to the future prosperity of Canberra and the region.”
An accounting firm has been appointed to lead a process to develop a proposal which will be taken to special meetings of members later this year. It will need the support of 75 per cent of the eligible members present to succeed.
