Grumpy / Reach for a new Floriade site

Yarramundi ReachPLEASE, don’t move Floriade to Glebe Park.

The park is too small, surrounding streets would have to close to facilitate increased pedestrian traffic and where do we park all the visitors’ cars? It would be a logistical nightmare.

Instead, let’s develop the Yarramundi Reach area for a permanent garden display that incorporates the month-long Floriade festival.

The area is currently undeveloped, has beautiful sloping vistas to the lake and is adjacent to the National Arboretum and the National Rock Garden.

The area would easily accommodate a parking area to the east of the ATSIC Cultural Centre with the gardens on the west side adjacent to the National Rock Garden. Even the extensive parking at the Arboretum could be utilised.

The Cultural Centre building could be added to providing additional toilet facilities, a café, retail space, visitor areas and a Floriade office.

This arrangement would link the Australian National Botanic Gardens to the Arboretum and the National Rock Garden.

Let us also consider expanding the Floriade night festival, NightFest, to four weeks, incorporating additional retail outlets, a night food feast and a special light show on the land and the lake. The setting would just be magical.

If interstate cities can do it, why can’t Canberra not only be up there with the best, but be the best?
