ANDREW Barr says a re-elected ACT Labor government will help build a new ice sports facility in Canberra’s south.

“The success of the CBR Brave ice hockey team has created a groundswell of support for a new ice sports facility to cater for growing demand,” Andrew said.

“ACT Labor is listening, and will work with the ACT Ice Sports Federation to deliver a new facility for Canberrans.

“In partnership with the Federation, a Labor government will undertake community and industry consultation to determine the best location, construction and operational models for the project, including a likely commercial partnership with an existing club or facility manager.

“Construction will commence within the four year parliamentary term and the Government will make a capital contribution in addition to providing appropriate support around land use and planning.

“Initial funding of $75,000 will be made available to progress the design and consultation phase.”

ACT Ice Sport’s Federation President Tony Prescott said that the commitment from ACT Labor is a fantastic outcome for ice sports in the ACT, and for ice sports nationally.

“With Canberra being the national capital and the gateway to the snowy, with a modern, state-of-the-art facility, the ACT will be very well placed to host national and international ice sports events, while further developing our emerging local talent,” Tony said.

The CBR Brave also said the announcement is a milestone moment for ice sports in the ACT, and for the Brave.

“Canberra has developed an impressive reputation across the Australian Ice Hockey League as the home of the most committed and passionate fans in the league,” said CBR Brave Director Warren Apps.

“A new ice sports centre will secure our future and allow the CBR Brave to further grow its supporter base, access more training time, attract top quality international players and provide more opportunities to develop the next generation of local talent.”
