Drunk driver crashes car during school pick up

A DRUNK driver will be required to face the ACT Magistrates Court after he crashed his car while he was picking up children from school.

At about 3.15pm yesterday (February 14), police received a report of a two vehicle collision outside Garran Primary School on Gilmore Crescent.

The male driver had been attempting a three-point turn outside the school when he collided with a parked vehicle which had two children and an adult inside. ACT police say that no one was injured.

The 55-year-old male driver stopped and provided his details to the occupant of the parked car. He then picked up his two children from the school and drove a short distance home.

Police located the driver once he had arrived home and conducted a breath test which returned a result of 0.159, above the legal limit of 0.05.

During this time, his two children remained in the care of police.

Officer in Charge Woden Station Sergeant Harry Hains says the driver was lucky no one was hurt.

He says: “It’s never OK to get behind the wheel drunk – you risk your life and you risk the lives of everyone on the road around you. It’s appalling that someone would drive drunk with two children in the car and with children all around in a school zone.”
