Northbourne’s facelift

ROOF gardens, swimming pools, a public library, cafes and restaurants; see the Northbourne Apartments public housing complex completely transformed at an exhibition this week only in Civic.

The exhibition will feature entries from more than 40 of the most highly regarded architecture firms from around the country who are competing for the chance to redesign the complex that was built in the 1950s.

One of the key elements of the redesign competition includes incorporating about 1000 properties (currently the number is 245), while working within existing height restrictions.

Another element is a consideration for the heritage value of the building and ensuring environmental sustainability.

A panel of senior public servants and practising architects has been looking over the entries for a week and, with the advice of techinical advisors, will select the winning schemes.

The public will also have the chance to vote for the People’s Choice design.

The exhibition will be at the Garema Court Building on City Walk, from 12pm to 3pm, all week. Winners will be announced early next week.
