Woman escapes Ngunnawal blaze

FIREFIGHTERS say a smoke alarm saved a woman’s life after an unattended cigarette caused fire in her Ngunnawal home on Saturday.

Fire crews responded to an emergency call just after 2am on Carina Street and arrived to find a blaze in the bedroom and a smoke alarm sounding off.

The sole occupant, an elderly lady, had safely evacuated from the property and firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.

The initial damage bill has been estimated at $5,000.

Firefighters say the incident highlights the importance of working smoke alarms.
