Courtenay dies at home in Canberra

BEST-SELLING author Bryce Courtenay has died at home in Canberra at the age of 79.

Bryce Courtenay
Courtenay, who has had a long battle with stomach cancer, died last night with his wife by his side.

The South-African born author has sold more than 20 million books, including his best known novel, “The Power of One.”

This year he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Canberra during one of the university’s graduation ceremonies in September.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher and opposition leader Zed Seselja acknowledged the life and contribution of Courtenay as an outstanding Australian and Canberran.

“Bryce Courtenay was a gentle but great man, who was not only an exceptional novelist and Australian, but also a great friend and supporter of Canberra,” Gallagher said.

“Bryce has been an instrumental part of the Canberra community, and was a valued contributor to the older person’s Assembly in September 2011,” Seselja said.

Courtenay is survived by his second wife Christine, and his children Adam and Brett.
