“WAKING up the Butterflies” is an exquisite exhibition of drawings by Josephine Rajathi Lamech, in its last days at the Kaori Gallery, Civic.

A drawing by “Athi”
Known as “Athi,” Lamech is the youngest of eight children in a family of  Burmese parents of South Indian heritage.

She migrated to Australia when she was ten and now works and lives in Canberra, where her studies of landscape have covered  Australia, Flinders Ranges and this immediate region.

Her landscapes  are achieved through the use  of subtle tones and mark-making using charcoal and contè. Her lines (occasionally described  as ‘messy lines’ by viewers) are intended to draw out the essence of the landscape or emotion that she experiences.

Lamech’s paintings and drawings have been described as “engaging and enigmatic”, works in which she incorporate spiritual insights. They are held are in both private and public collections in Australia.

“Waking up the Butterflies,”  Canberra City Framing Gallery), cnr London Circuit (39) & Hobart Place, Civic, 9am – 5.30pm until Thursday November 1.
