THE ACT National Trust has released its annual list of heritage and historically significant places in the Territory judged to be most at risk.
The list is a part of the National Trust Australia-wide program, “Heritage at Risk,” where each state and territory assesses and identifies places which are most at risk from destruction, deterioration, neglect and inappropriate development.
The ACT National Trust called on its members and the general public to nominate places they thought were at risk and an expert committee of the Trust assessed the nominations.
The top places most at risk for 2012 are:
Canberra’s Residential Housing Precincts
ACT Supreme Court
Lake Burley Griffin West Basin
Cork Oak Plantation
Civic Pool
Kingston Fitters Workshop
The ANU Constables Cottage Buggy Shed
Heritage Listed Open Spaces
The President of the ACT National Trust, Eric Martin, said, “with the release of this list the ACT National Trust hopes to draw attention to the threatened nature of some of the Territory’s important heritage places and in the future we hope to be able to work with owners and managers to conserve them in the best possible way.”
Mr Martin said that this year’s list focused on a sites not previously listed, highlighting the point that all our heritage is “at risk of degradation if not appropriately conserved and managed.”
