Northbourne blaze causes $40k damage

A  unit blaze in Lyneham early this morning caused $40,000 worth of damage.

It took four fire pumpers, a command vehicle, Hazardous Materials Unit and Breathing Apparatus Support to control the fire at the “Owen Flats” on Northbourne Avenue, with the blaze believed to have started near a bed mattress.

Minimal smoke damage was received to the remainder of the unit and one neighbouring unit.

One person is believed to have been home during the start of the blaze and safely self evacuated. There are no injuries reported.

Neighboring units on the ground floor of the three story complex were evacuated but residents returned to the building shortly after.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
