Roller Derby rocks Canberra

A “rough, tough, and fantastic spectacle” is how promoters are describing the next bout of the Canberra Roller Derby League to be held on Saturday.

In a rematch of last year’s grand final, the “Red-Bellied Black Hearts” will take on the “Black ‘n’ Blue Belles”.

Organisers say the roller derby league has seen a sharp rise in popularity since it began in Canberra in 2009.

There are now four teams – the “Brindabelters”, “Black ‘n’ Blue Belles”, “Red-Bellied Black Hearts” and “Surly Griffins”.

The league recently collaborated with public transport provider ACTION – artist Ed Radclyffe’s colourful roller derby mural will be splashed on the side of one of the buses for a year.

The mural was paid for by four of the league’s sponsors, and the bus’ inaugural route on July 26 was kicked off by a photoshoot with representatives from each team.

The next bout in the Canberra Roller Derby League is on Saturday August 11 at the Southern Cross Stadium in Tuggeranong.
