Promoting healthy eating a winning idea

MERICI College has taken out this year’s ACT Sustainable Cities Award for its Kitchen Garden program.

Merici College Students Laura Thomas,Teagan White and Madeline Smith accept the awards on behalf of the college.
The program, which includes a garden filled with fresh vegetables, fruit and herbs and a new state of the art canteen, was established in 2009 to promote healthy eating habits for students and staff.

The Sustainable Cities Awards are an initiative of Keep Australia Beautiful and celebrate the achievement in litter reduction and the broader sustainability agenda including water and energy conservation.

They are open to community, business and all levels of government in the territory.

As well as winning the overall award for the territory, Merici also received the “Young Legends” category award.

Merici College will now go on to represent the ACT at the National awards held later in the year.

Today judges from Keep Australia Beautiful will visit the school to look at the program.
