Scurry and the art of reflection

JOHN Scurry is the latest painter to exhibit at Chapman Gallery whose work is relatively unfamiliar to most Canberra art lovers.

Scurry, “Armchair,” 102 x 81cm, oil on linen
Scurry began showing his work in 1969, building a reputation as a draughtsman. He held his first solo exhibition in 1975 and soon acquired a name as a formidable printmaker and a portrait painter with many high profile commissions.

Though his work has hung in many major prizes, including the Archibald Prize and the Dobell drawing prize, and is represented in most major state, regional and private collections, Scurry has kept a relatively low profile, preferring a quieter, more reflective artistic path.

This will be his first solo exhibition in Canberra.

John Scurry “Recent Paintings” at Chapman Gallery, 1/11 Murray Crescent, Manuka, August 10- September 5. Opening Friday, August 10 at 5.30pm, Artist’s talk, 2pm Saturday, August 11.

Gallery jumps into immersive art

As Aarwun Gallery in Gold Creek enters its 25th year, director Robert Stephens has always had a creative approach to his packed openings, mixing music and talk with fine art, but this year he's outdoing himself, reports HELEN MUSA.
