ADFA cadets crazy for showbiz

IT’S good to see ADFA students branching out into showbiz this season as news comes to hand of the impending production by ADFA Performing Arts Company of the Gershwin brothers’ famous musical, “Crazy for You” at The Q.

The show is Ken Ludwig’s 1992 adaptation of George and Ira Gershwin’s 1930 musical comedy “Girl Crazy,” and if you thought cadets couldn’t dance, think again—this is THE  dance musical par excellence.

The story revolves around Bobby Child, the son of a prominent US East Coast banker who’d rather be a song-and-dance man. Forced to enter the family business, his first assignment is (as fate would have it) to foreclose on the Gaiety Theatre in Deadrock, Arizona. But when he falls in love with Polly Baker, daughter of the Gaiety’s owner, Bobby dedicates himself to saving the theatre.

He achieves this by the age-old technique of staging a fabulous show  with himself in the lead.

This story is, naturally enough, an excuse to stage some of the Gershwins’ best-loved songs, including “Embraceable You,” “Bidin’ My Time,” and “I Got Rhythm”.

The seven-year-old Performing Arts Company of ADFA forms part of the extracurricular activities of the cadets. It provides opportunities for all cadets to take part in the cast, chorus, band, back stage and technical crew aspects of the performance. The entire production is run by cadets allowing leadership opportunities for senior cadets including producer, director, designers and coaches.

The cast and crew, drawn from the many Midshipmen and Officer cadets at the Australian Defence Force Academy, have been rehearsing since early May.

Ticket sale proceeds will be donated to the charity HOME in Queanbeyan, which provides 24-hour care for people with chronic mental illness who are without appropriate shelter, care, love and support.

The Australian Defence Force Academy’s “Crazy For You,” at The Q – Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre, 7pm, August 15-17 and 10.30am, August 17.   On closing night, August 17, you can purchase a food and beverage package including admission for $40, but the cut-off for these special tickets is August 9. Bookings to 6285 6290.
