Drugs in the post send young couple to court

A 20-year-old Belconnen man and his 20-year-old partner will face to court over the illegal importation via mail of a controlled substance.

Police-afp-cops-0021-175x175In late May, Australian Customs and Border Protection Service intercepted a mail consignment from China and discovered two of the six packages contained a commercial quantity (1050 grams) of a controlled drug, namely Alpha-PVP, a synthetic stimulant with similar effects to amphetamines.

ACT Police took carriage of the investigation and executed a search warrant where the also seized 238 tablets of oxycontin.

Drugs and Organised Crime team’s Det-Sgt Craig Marriott said that people attempting to import controlled substances via mail or parcel delivery need to be aware that sophisticated resources are in place to detect and intercept this illegal activity.

“Police work closely with their partner agencies to fight this type of crime,” he said.

“Drug importers appear to be lulled into some false sense of security that by using the internet to order material from an overseas location, it somehow masks their involvement or detaches them from the crime.

“Our message is clear: if you do this, you will be caught.”

Anyone with information or suspicions about the importation of illegal or controlled substances from overseas should call 1800 333 000 or via act.crimestoppers.com.au
