SIMON Corbell has welcomed an independent report by the Australian Railway Association (ARA) that shows light rail is a perfect fit for Canberra, is appropriate for a city of our population size and density, will increase active transport use and will benefit the entire ACT economy.

“The report, released today at the Light Rail 2015 conference in Sydney, confirmed that the time is right for Canberra to invest in Capital Metro,” Simon said.

“By using examples from across the globe, the ARA has reminded Australian policy makers that light rail is a key element in successful city planning. Prioritising public transport is essential to manage future growth and improve urban amenity, liveability and sustainability in cities of all sizes.

“The report demonstrates that the ACT Government is not on its own with more than 400 light rail systems operational and 100 under construction globally. More and more cities, of all densities and sizes, are recognising the multiple benefits that fixed light rail infrastructure brings.

“Importantly, the report highlights examples of how light rail works successfully in cities of smaller or similar populations to Canberra, including Nice and Valenciennes in France, Frieburg im Breisgau in Germany and Charlotte in the United States.

“The ARA provides evidence of the global renaissance of light rail for its proven ability to tackle congestion, attract investment and create healthier communities. Canberra is ready to join the global light rail renaissance.

“The report also identifies the impressive capacity benefits offered by light rail that moves between 4,000 and 20,000 people every hour, compared to the same road space that can move about 1,000 people in cars or between 2,000 and 8000 people in buses. This capacity is crucial for Canberra’s public transport as we head towards a population of 600,000 by 2051.

“The ARA notes that other light rail projects, particularly those in car dependent cities, faced opposition during the early stages. Experience demonstrates that as soon light rail is operational, local communities and businesses demand extensions and more services. In Australia, this has been the case in both Adelaide and the Gold Coast.”

Mr Corbell also welcomed the ARA’s support of the government’s recent decision to include a possible extension to Russell from the City as part of the procurement process for stage one.

“According to the ARA, patronage is the most commonly cited indicator of success for public transport and therefore all efforts should be made to ensure Capital Metro stage one captures a significant patronage base. The ARA has recognised in the report that including Russell as part of stage one would allow for greater all-day, bi-directional patronage.”
