Zed secures federal funding for drug rehab

zed

ZED Seselja says local drug an alcohol rehabilitation service Karralika will receive half a million dollars in funding from the Abbott Government to ensure their services can continue.

“This is fantastic news for Canberra and follows strong representations I have made to Scott Morrison since he became Minister for Social Services. These additional funds will be delivered to ensure Karralika can continue to provide services for families affected by alcohol or drug misuse,” Zed said.

“Karralika has been providing alcohol and other drug rehabilitation services for families for about 30 years. This funding, for 2 additional years to 30 June 2017, secures the future of critical programmes that support our local community.

“Karralika’s initial Federal Government funding application under the Department of Social Services’ New Way of Working for Grants scheme was unsuccessful. However my representations to Minister Morrison subsequently secured the funding under a gap analysis undertaken into the grants scheme by the Minister this year.

“I thank the Minister for his strong support. This is good news for Canberrans, particularly for vulnerable families who are battling alcohol or drug issues. These challenges can affect not just families directly affected but also our wider community. That’s why the work that Karralika does is especially important.

“I am proud to have assisted in providing certainty for Karralika’s rehabilitation services. The funding will be provided through the Department of Social Services, New Way of Working for Grants scheme,” Senator Seselja said.

Meanwhile Labor’s Gai Brodtman is not impressed the services were ever cut.

“It’s outrageous that ACT Senator Zed Seselja is taking credit for reinstating a cut for which his Government is responsible,” Gai said.

“Staff and clients at Karralika have been placed under extreme stress and have been operating in a state of limbo since Christmas for absolutely no reason at all.

“Is Senator Seselja also standing up for the other community organisations in Canberra that have had their funding cut as a result of this Government?

“Of course I welcome the Government’s decision to reverse this funding cut – I have been lobbying the Government for this outcome for the past six months”.
