New data shows ‘staggering’ rise in dog attacks

NEW data reveals a “staggering” 422 per cent increase in the number of reported dog attacks, says Shadow Minister for Urban Services Nicole Lawder.

Nicole Lawder.

According to government figures 485 dog attacks were reported to domestic animal services during 2017 and 2018, as opposed to the 93 dog attack incidents, which were reported five years ago in 2013 and 2014.

In this calendar year up until September 2, Ms Lawder says 154 dogs were seized after a dog attack and 78 were declared dangerous, or released on control orders or euthanised.

Earlier this week Ms Lawder proposed new animal welfare laws that will create clear and simple accountability measures after a dog attack.

Interested Canberrans and stakeholders can provide feedback on Ms Lawder’s proposed laws at or on the ACT Legislative Register.
