Renters ‘struggle’ with rising costs

Opposition Leader Alistair Coe.

FOLLOWING a rise in weekly rent for both houses and units, Opposition Leader Alistair Coe says Chief Minister Andrew Barr’s tax reform is suffocating the private market, making it difficult for both home owners and renters

Domain’s “State of the Market Rental Report” for the June quarter has revealed that Canberra’s median weekly asking rent for houses is $550, and $450 for units.

“Increases to rates and land tax have made it very expensive for Canberrans to own a home,” Mr Coe says.

“Renters are being charged more to offset increasing charges that home owners must pay.

“There’s no denying that Canberra has become a two paced society, with so many Canberrans struggling to keep up with the cost of living under ACT Labor.”
