Cops fine 183 drivers over the long weekend

POLICE issued 183 traffic infringement notices over the Labour Day long weekend, with Canberra’s top road cop saying some of these drivers will have their licences suspended.

“A small number of motorists chose to ignore the rules with poor driving behaviour and only have themselves to blame. They put not only themselves at risk, but also other road users,” says road policing detective acting superintendent Marcus Boorman.

Of these motorists, he says 106 motorists were detected for speeding, with four of those, including a P-plate driver, detected travelling between 30km/h and 45km/h above the posted speed limit during the double demerit period.

The penalty in the ACT during the double demerit period for exceeding the speed limit by 30km/h, but less than 45km/h is $700 and eight demerit points, superintendent Boorman says.

Police also conducted 1793 road side breath tests, where three drivers tested positive, and 50 road side drug tests, where eight drivers tested positive.

“We had some minor collisions, [too], however, we were fortunate over the long weekend not to experience a major incident or serious collision on our roads,” Boorman says.

With inclement weather forecast for this week, ACT police urge motorists to drive to the conditions on the wet roads, leave a greater distance between their vehicle and the one in front and turn their lights on.
