CAPITAL Football life member and one of Belnorth Football Club’s founding members, Henk Thijssens, died last month. He was 83.

Henk, the last active founding member of Belnorth, died on October 13.

With “great sadness”, the club commemorated Henk for his commitment to the club, and said their “thoughts are with his family and friends”.

Henk first got involved in soccer in 1975 when his then kids were playing. He started as the manager and then coach of Belconnen United, which later became Belnorth. In 1977, after realising there was a shortage of referees around, Henk did a course so he could help out.

He went on to referee football games in the region for more than 40 years.

Dedicated to the club, Henk, also took on other roles there such as referees’ co-ordinator, treasurer and various other committee posts.
