“IF you feel unsafe, the best option is to leave early,” is the warning from the ACT ESA as it urges people in Tharwa and the southern suburbs of Banks, Gordon and Conder and surrounding areas to “monitor conditions closely and be ready to act” as the Orroral Valley Fire continues to grow.
No properties are under immediate threat at this time and there is currently no threat to the southern suburbs, “but conditions can change quickly,” says the ESA.
Although currently at the “watch and act” rating, the fire’s activity is increasing as conditions deteriorate. The size of the fire has now reached 34,814 hectares.
“Fire conditions today will again become erratic and volatile,” says the agency. “Heavy spotting to the east, south and west of the main fire is anticipated.”
The ESA is particularly warning people in Tharwa Village, Boboyan Road, Apollo Road, Top Naas Road and Nass Road to “remain vigilant”.
The fire remains out of control and is travelling in a south easterly direction.
