Liberals pledge to give funding to playgroups

A CANBERRA Liberals government will give $200,000 a year to ACT playgroups, says leader Alistair Coe.

The party says the money will support a roll-out of paint and playgroup sessions in ACT primary school, more early intervention and family support groups to help children with special needs and it will ensure new playgroup communities can be built in growth suburbs.

Mr Coe says: “It’s worth investing in programs that improve the social and emotional wellbeing of families, and that give young children greater prospects to succeed in their learning.

“For many disadvantaged families, play-based group education can lead to better learning outcomes for children in their later years.”

Liberal spokeswoman for families, youth and community services Elizabeth Kikkert says parent-led community playgroups helps many parents struggling with social isolation.

“It’s important that mothers and fathers have a strong sense of community and solidarity to know that they are not alone in their parenting journey,” Mrs Kikkert says.

“These programs help children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, better transition into school.”
