APPLICATIONS have opened for the new Canberra Symphony Youth Chamber Orchestra, a performance enrichment program for musicians aged 14-19 who have reached an advanced level on their instruments.
To kick off next year, CSYCO – pronounced “psycho” – will be led by CSO concertmaster Kirsten Williams, who will mentor participants in chamber and orchestral playing, individual performance development, musicianship and professional skills.
CSYCO will rehearse weekly during school terms and perform once per term, with a focus on unconducted performance for a smaller group of players. Participants will also take part in regular performance classes and support each other to develop individual and ensemble skills.
“Without a doubt, the most important education I received as a young violinist was learning to play with others without a conductor,” Williams said.
“In this context, each player gains vital ensemble and interpersonal technical skills, learning how to truly listen and watch each other.”
Rachel Thomas, CEO of the orchestra, said the program would complement and extend school music programs and other opportunities in the region.
Applications here by August 27.
