“EMIL and the Detectives” by Erich Kästner, adapted for the stage by Nicki Bloom, is in town now. Told by two skilled actors immersed in smoke and mirrors, miniature worlds and a cinematic score, it shows young Emil catching a train to visit family in the big city where something valuable is stolen. Instrumentalists in the Wind Symphony.

THE Australian Wind Symphony, directed by Geoff Grey, have commissioned brand-new compositions to be performed alongside tried and true favourites, demonstrating the full scope of the wind orchestra experience for their coming concert “Celebrate”. NANCY Sever Gallery is presenting cityscapes and seascapes by the renowned Melbourne artist Ji Chen. Trained at the Shanghai Drama Academy, he worked as chief set designer for the Beijing Opera Theatre Company of China then won a prestigious national award before emigrating to Australia in 1989. “WAYFARING: Photography in 1970s-80s” is a collaboration with the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts that looks into the work of photographers under the authoritarian martial law era from 1949 to 1987, little known in Australia. “DOMESTIC Disturbance” by Keziah Craven explores the traumatic effects of domestic abuse and the failure of government agencies to provide adequate assistance to those impacted by it. Through the development of an architectural embodied space, the artist brings her personal lived experience through art into the public realm.
