Canberra club plans to honour life of lost teen hockey player

CBR Brave plans to dedicate their 2021 Australian Ice Hockey League season to the memory of former player Lachlan Seary.

After Seary passed away in a car accident in the early hours of Monday, the Canberra club plans to honour the 19-year-old by wearing his initials on team jerseys and also hosting a preseason event in his name.

Brave chief executive Dan Amodio said the team will return to the ice with heavy hearts.

“To lose Lachy, at such a young age and in horrific circumstances, is a tragedy beyond words,” Amodio said.

“As a club, from the front office to the playing group, we will be doing everything we can to commemorate his memory prior to and during the 2021 season.”

Seary had been killed in a head on crash with another vehicle on the Monaro Highway.

Paramedics were on the scene and attempted to revive the former Braves junior, while the other driver was hospitalised.

The side begins its new AIHL campaign on May 8 after the 2020 national competition was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The new year will be played across two regional conferences to prevent any issues relating to border closures and travel risks from the pandemic.

The Brave will compete against the Sydney Ice Dogs and Newcastle Northstars from May to August, according to the club, and against the Melbourne Ice and Melbourne Mustangs from August to September.

“For the players, fans, sponsors, we are just so relieved that we can get them some live action, so that they can start to feel like things are returning to normal,” Brave general manager Sunny Singh said.
