VOTERS have elected Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council’s (QPRC) first indigenous person as their representative.

Bigambul woman Esma Livermore, who appeared second on Labor’s ticket, will be elected following the party’s strong showing on Saturday’s (December 4) election.
Ms Livermore was elected behind Bryce Wilson, a staffer to Bean Labor MP David Smith, who has also picked up a seat on the 11 member council.
Labor has its nose comfortably in front of the Queanbeyan-Palerang Council poll with 47 per cent of first-preference votes counted so far.
At last count, Labor received 21.7 per cent of first preference votes, followed by an independent ticket – headed by Kenrick Winchester – on 17 per cent of first preference votes.
The Liberals’ ticket received more than 16 per cent of first preferences, and the Greens had more than 10 per cent of first-preference votes.
Early results show the Liberals secured 2957 above-the-line votes, fulfilling the requirements to have two candidates – Louise Burton and Jacqueline Ternouth – elected to council.
Incumbent QPRC councillor Kenrick Winchester has been returned, while Edwina Webster, second on Mr Winchester’s ticket, could also be elected.
Greens candidate Katrina Willis has secured a seat on council, with the party picking up 1718 above the line votes, and Mareeta Grundy who headed an independent ticket has also picked up a spot on council.
Preferences will determine the remaining councillors.
Overall, 20,447 votes have been counted, a total 1748 of these were informal.
Postal votes will be received up until December 17.
Councillors will vote for a new mayor and deputy mayor at council’s first meeting next year.
