Planted and poised but Floriade is cancelled again

THIS year’s month-long Floriade (and NightFest), set to start of September 11, has been cancelled for the second year in a row because of covid concerns.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr made the announcement this morning (August 21) saying it was unsafe to have large gatherings of people.

“It will look similar to last year,” he said.

“Obviously the bulbs have been planted in Commonwealth Park and will bloom through spring.

But the government is discouraging large-scale gatherings at this time.

“Planter boxes and pots that were to feature in Commonwealth Park will be relocated throughout the city and suburbs. The boxes will complement the 300,000 bulbs and annuals which have been planted by local schools, community groups and organisations earlier in the year.”

One Response to Planted and poised but Floriade is cancelled again

While we don’t like the reason for it, we actually prefer Floriade like this, with plantings distributed all through the Canberra. The last few times we went to actual Floriade in Commonwealth Park, we were quite underwhelmed. Too few flowers and too many commercial operations.
Last year was so much better seeing flowers everywhere we went. They greatly improved the bland concrete expanse on Anketell Street outside the Hyperdome, for example.
