7000 residents call for safer roads in the ACT

MORE than 7000 people have signed a petition calling for an independent review of judiciary sentencing and changes to road safety laws across the ACT.

In the almost five-months since his son’s death, Tom McLuckie has compiled and examined sentencing outcomes and campaigned through his social media page “ACT Now for Safer Roads”, drawing the conclusion that current sentencing is inadequate to act as a real deterrent against dangerous driving behaviour.

His son, Matthew, 20, was killed in a head-on collision in May when a stolen car that was travelling at high speeds down the wrong side of Hindmarsh Drive hit his vehicle.

Tom’s ongoing review of sentencing and road laws has prompted his call for a review of judicial sentencing in the ACT.

Today (October 7), McLuckie met with Police Shadow Minister Jeremy Hanson, with his petitions totalling more than 7000 signatures, to call for an independent review of the judiciary “and certainly the sentencing”.

“Today I was honoured to receive petitions from Tom McLuckie, signed by over 7000 people combined, calling for a review of sentencing and changes to laws to make roads safer in the ACT,” said Hanson.

“Thank you Tom and Sarah for your advocacy to make our community safer. You have made a real difference.”

The petitions will be tabled in the Legislative Assembly next Tuesday (October 11).
