CWA seat tagged by graffiti vandals

VANDALS have sprayed graffiti on a commemorative bench in honour of the Country Women’s Association (CWA) in Queanbeyan.

The wooden park seat in Queanbeyan’s Queen Elizabeth II Park, was gifted to the city in May by the Queanbeyan Evening CWA branch, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Country Women’s Association.

Queanbeyan Evening CWA branch president Nicole Lyons said she was “heartbroken” by the low act.

“Lots of hard work went into raising funds so that we could present this bench to be enjoyed by members of our community,” Lyons said in a post on the Queanbeyan Community Noticeboard.

“It is heartbreaking to see that it has been graffitied on.”

Lyons was left wondering who would want to vandalise the commemorative seat given the association’s strong links with the community.

“To whoever did this maybe we helped a member of your family or someone you know,” she said on Facebook.

“How sad it is to see that people just don’t care how hard community groups work to help those in need.”

The CWA celebrated their 100 year birthday this year, with the Queanbeyan branch set to celebrate its centenary next year, Lyons said.

CityNews understands the graffiti has since been removed.
