Health services top list of complaints with human rights agency

MORE than 1000 Canberrans have made a complaint to the ACT Human Rights Commission, with the majority of complaints being about health services, new data shows.

Of the 1100 Canberrans that made a complaint to the Commission in 2021-22, more than 70 per cent of were about health services.

More than 200 complaints were made to the commission about discrimination, up by 30 per cent on last year’s figures.

Data from the Commission’s annual report 2021-22, also showed that over 3,000 victims of crime were assisted in Canberra – with more than 570 victims of crime applying for financial assistance.

The report also revealed an increase in direct advocacy for clients of the Public Advocate and a growing demand for mental health advocacy.

ACT Human Rights Commission President and Human Rights Commissioner, Dr Helen Watchirs said: “The Canberra community continues to trust our services, our staff and the support we provide across a range of areas.

“For example, our complaints handling services provide Canberrans with a comprehensive and accessible means of resolving their concerns, and people often come to us when they have been unable to resolve a concern or deal with an issue informally.”
