WORK to raise London Circuit to accommodate light rail to Commonwealth Park starts today (October 10), meaning significant disruptions for Canberra drivers.
The project will create a level intersection with Commonwealth Avenue to facilitate light rail’s right-hand turn from London Circuit towards the lake.
Construction of temporary traffic lights and a new bus lane at the northern side of Vernon Circle starts today as the ACT government pushes on with its plan to extend the light rail to Woden.
A new footpath and pedestrian signals on City Hill between Constitution Avenue and Edinburgh Avenue are also being installed to provide pedestrian links across the city during construction.
The works will cause significant parking and traffic disruptions expected to last for years.
“To make this road level with Commonwealth Avenue is one of the most significant changes to the road network in central Canberra since the 1960s,” said Minister for Transport Chris Steel.
“This project will make sure Canberra grows as a sustainable, vibrant and connected city, with better access between the city and the lake.”
Work to build the new City Hill footpath, install traffic lights and have a new bus lane is expected to take between eight and 12 weeks.
